Game of Thrones bosses ‘planning another prequel and first film spin-off’

Game of Thrones fans will reportedly have plenty more of Westeros to enjoy as they await the next series of House of the Dragon. 

HBO are reportedly considering making not just another prequel, but also Game of Thrones’ first feature film spin-off. 

According to Variety, the US studio is in discussion with Warner Bros to bring the world of Westeros to the big screen, with the movie then leading into a brand new telly series. 

While everything do to with the potential GoT franchise expansion is currently underwraps, the story of the spin-off and follow-on film will likely look at the story of Aegon and his sister-wives, Visenya and Rhaenys, as they use their army and dragons to conquer six of the seven kingdoms. 

Tom Glynn-Carney and Ty Tennant starred as Aegon in prequel series House of the Dragon while Eve Best played Rhaenys. 

While GoT fans still have a while to go before anything else is confirmed, HBO’s massively successful House of the Dragon is set to return soon, but series two will be shorter than its debut season. 

At the time, it was reported the new series would run for 10 episodes, but now it has been confirmed it will be just eight episodes long.

Many speculated this was due to cutting costs as a result of a leadership shake-up at Warner Bros Discovery, HBO’s parent company. However HBO has now confirmed to Deadline, the loss of two episodes was a “story-driven” decision.

According to the publication, HBO is considering whether to greenlight a third season and move some big plot points originally planned for season 2 into the next instalment (which has already been planned).

This would suggest that House of the Dragon, set nearly 200 years before Game Of Thrones, would likely run for four seasons in total, but this is yet to be confirmed.

Filming for season two began earlier this month and HBO’s chief content officer, Casey Bloys, previously told fans to expect its premiere in 2024.

He said: “We’re just starting to put the plan together, and just like last time, there are so many unknowns. It’s not to be coy or secretive, but you don’t want to say it’s going to be ready on this date, and then you have to move it.”
