Across his many acting roles, Idris Elba has faced some formidable opponents, and now he is reportedly taking on a real-life one, in the form of a Formula 1 legend.
The Luther actor is set to take on none other than Lewis Hamilton in a race across the desert, according to The Sun.
Seven-times world champion Hamilton will compete against the star actor “in electric 4x4 off-road vehicles in the notorious Dakar Rally,” as part of a two-part show for Channel 4, The Sun reports.
The two celebs have been friends for years, and Elba is a keen car enthusiast, having previously filmed a BBC documentary called Idris Elba: King Of Speed.
The annual Dakar Rally is an off-road endurance event over a number of days, with the terrain being much tougher than in conventional rallying. Most events since it started in 1978 went from Paris to Dakar in Senegal, but from 2009 to 2019 the rally was held in South America, and since 2020 the 8,500km race has taken place in Saudi Arabia.
A TV insider told The Sun: “Idris is a self-confessed speed freak and was determined to make this a tough race for Lewis.
“The course is one of the toughest in sport, with the rough terrain a constant hazard for drivers.
“But that didn’t put either Idris or Lewis off as they were desperate to out-do each other, and their rivalry was captured brilliantly on camera.”
The two-parter, called Idris And Hamilton Race The Desert, is reportedly set to air later this year.
Idris Elba’s new film, Luther: The Fallen Sun, is currently streaming on Netflix. It is a continuation of the award winning BBC television series.
Speaking to virginradio.co.uk and other press from the red carpet at the BFI IMAX in Waterloo at its global premiere last month, he said: “I really hope that this is the beginning of a new chapter. Do you know what I mean? I think this is the beginning of a new chapter, so we can see more Luther.”
