The first series of hit police drama Blue Lights is heading for a thrilling conclusion, after viewers were left reeling at events in the penultimate episode.

The fifth instalment of the BBC show aired last night (April 24th), and focused on Mo’s (Michael Shea) guns, ammo and drugs deal with Sully (Art Campion), which was being done without the permission of the head of the family, James McIntyre, (John Lynch). However, in a twist revealed last week, the dad does in fact know about it, as it turns out he is in cahoots with senior intelligence operative Joseph (Nabil Elouahabi).

There are spoilers ahead if you haven’t seen episode five yet.

Mo, Anto (Gerard Jordan) and Gordy (Dane Whyte O'Hara) get the deal done at a location which is OOB - which means Out Of Bounds, as any fan of the show can now tell you. However, in a very tense and dramatic scene, inquisitive veteran copper Gerry (Richard Dormer), defies orders and snoops around, leading to him getting shot by Sully. Jen (Hannah McClean), who is Gerry's partner for the day while Tommy (Nathan Braniff) is taking his tests, comes out of her shell and shoots and kills Sully.

The episode ends with Jen desperately trying to stem Gerry's bleeding while she awaits back-up.

The camera pans out and the episode ends with Jen still tending to her colleague.

Fans of the show took to Twitter to comment. One wrote: “So episode 5 of Blue Lights is the weeping buckets episode. Gotcha.”

Someone else wrote: “Episode 5 of Blue Lights has me sobbing 😭😭 why would they do that.”

Another said: “Just finished episode 5 of Blue Lights on @BBCiPlayer which had me in bits. If you haven’t already watched this it’s one of the best dramas made in years, brilliant cast, has you on edge and if you don’t love Gerry then I don’t want to know."

One commenter said: "Did not expect and did not want that. Pray for Gerry."

Another wrote: "Oh no, Gerry no no no. Be safe. Take a beat. #BlueLights"

With the final episode set to air next Monday, Blue Lights has now been confirmed for a second series, with one of its writers giving an update on when it will air.
