Race Across The World 2023 has finally crowned its winners after an incredible trek through the Canadian wilderness.

(Big spoilers ahead if you’re yet to catch up!)

While three couples remained on their treacherous journey across 16,000 kilometres and six time zones, there could only be one to make the final checkpoint before the others, and this time, it was Cathie and Tricia who were first across the finish line.

Fighting off tough competition from the other two teams, Cathie and Tricia were the first to arrive at the Lighthouse on Cape Spear. Mobeen and Zainib followed in second place, with Ladi and Monique coming in third.

Taking on such a journey is a seriously impressive feat, so it’s easy to understand why many could throw in the towel, however for Cathie and Tricia, there was one moment in particular they found almost too difficult to overcome.

As seen on the show, Tricia’s husband was in hospital after a kidney transplant failure, and upon learning of his health situation, the pair almost left the competition. However, it was Tricia’s husband that actually convinced them to continue, making their big win all the sweeter.

Speaking exclusively to virginradio.co.uk, Cathie said: “There were, I would say, probably three or four days, when I didn't know if we were going to be going home. I didn't want to influence Tricia’s decision, I knew that it was a very, very difficult decision for her.

“Even though her husband was absolutely adamant that she should stay. It was alright for him to say that, but of course, her heart was telling her she needed to be at home with her husband. Those three or four days, I genuinely did not know if we were going to be going home the next day. That was difficult because I don't know what I would have done if I had been in that situation. That was the most difficult moment.”

Tricia admitted that her husband soon became the pair’s driving force in getting to the finish line, with her significant other making some pretty convincing arguments as to why they should continue.

She explained: “My husband was adamant that we did it to the extent that he said if you come home I will divorce you. I didn't want to go home because I didn't want to stop the race because the race is a once in a lifetime opportunity. I knew that he was going to be okay because he was in the hospital. Poor Cathie, bless her. I kept saying, ‘I'm really sorry. I just can't, I don't know.' If I'd said I want to go home, it was the end of her race as well.”

Luckily for Cathie and Tricia, the determination to keep going meant they pushed on ahead, and ended up becoming the pair leading the charge, racing ahead of the other two couples.

Discussing the unbelievable experience of Race Across The World, Tricia added: "It was absolutely an amazing experience. It's a once in a lifetime opportunity. I think myself and Cathie grabbed it with both hands and made the most of every moment that we could. That was the whole point of us doing this to begin with. We wanted to have those opportunities. We wanted to be able to see everything and do anything and embrace travelling. It's just been an amazing experience."
