Fans were delighted when it was announced The Last of Us would be getting a second season, but it seems it might be the last, according to HBO.

When it premiered in January, the video game adaptation became a huge hit, and it was no surprise that it would be renewed for a second season.

Starring Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey, the series is set in post-apocalyptic America after civilization has been overtaken by a Cordyceps virus. The story follows Joel (Pascal), who has been tasked with delivering a young girl called Ellie (Ramsey) to a group of rebels that believe she holds the cure to the virus.

Fans had hoped there would be at least a third season in the franchise, but HBO drama chief Francesca Orsi has said there is no guarantee the show will continue past the upcoming second season.

Speaking to Deadline, she said: “I think Craig [Mazin] and Neil [Druckmann] are still figuring out where they're going to come to an end.

"We have loosely heard that there will be a Season 3 idea for the series, but at this point, we're taking it one season at a time. There's no guarantee at this point that we'll have a Season 3 but I know that they both have a vision for Season 3. Whether that lends itself to doing more [seasons], I don't know yet.”

There were fears that season two would take longer to reach our screens than first expected due to the ongoing Writers Guild of America (WGA) strike, however Bella Ramsey has hinted production will be starting very soon.

In an interview with Vanity Fair, they confirmed production could begin as soon as the end of the year and hinted at what fans could expect from the upcoming season.

“It’s darker,” they revealed. “It’s really a story about revenge, and a continuation from the first season about the dangers of unconditional love.”
