Good news from the USA where an iPhone was returned in working order from the unlikeliest place, the bottom of the sea!
We’ve all lost our phone, some of us have dropped them in water, some of that water unmentionable, and we’ve retrieved them, but those who’ve dropped theirs in the sea are resigned to the fact they’ll never be reunited. But every rule has its exception!
Say hello to Alex Shulze, CEO of 4Ocean, one of several ocean cleaning non profit organisations, you’ll know these guys as the ones who make beads from the plastic they collect, you buy the beaded bracelets and they use that money to clean up more plastic from the sea.
During a routine dive off the Florida coast he found an iPhone in one of those waterproof beach bags, probably dropped by a paddle boarder or a windsurfer.

Alex charged the phone, it worked perfectly, so he got in touch with its owner who was, as you can imagine, pretty shocked! The whole escapade went viral with three million views which is great for his bead sales!

More inspiring news from co-living communities around the world, we’ve met old ladies living in South London apartments, young people in a somerset forest, cool people on houseboats in Amsterdam and now in the final look in this fascinating series we meet a community of LGBTQ+ native Americans who are transforming a corner of California into a sustainable eco-community.
Say ya-hé to the Shelterwood Collective, so called because it offers a safe space to some seriously marginalised people. Being queer or trans and native American is a double whammy in a country that is still systematically racist and queer/transphobic . Black and indigenous people have been largely excluded from land stewardship in the USA and there is a horrible irony to that because indigenous people are the best at maintaining habitat in a sustainable way, it’s ingrained into their culture to look after the whole ecosystem they cohabit.
Founded by a trans and non binary climate justice activist and a queer forestry worker, in 2021, with grants and donations, and spread out over 900 acres, they will provide safe haven for a nucleus of LGBTQ+ permanent residents who will live alongside a revolving door of visitors: such as artists, activists and students who want to learn about land stewardship.
