With her hotly-anticipated Barbie film hitting cinemas this month, director Greta Gerwig seems set to take on the Narnia story as well.

Netflix acquired the film and TV rights to the C.S. Lewis book series back in 2018 and, whilst the streaming giant has yet to make an announcement regarding whether Gerwig will indeed be working on the Chronicles of Narnia films, The New Yorker has now reported that the acclaimed actor/writer/director will helm two movies.

Aside from the fact that Gerwig will reportedly also write the films, no further details were revealed in the article. And seeing as there has been no official announcement from Netflix, not much is known about what shape these films will take, and whether the director intends to kick-off with The Lion, The Witch And The Wardrobe or somewhere else.

When acquiring the rights in 2018, Managing Director of Netflix, Ted Sarandos said: “Families have fallen in love with characters like Aslan and the entire world of Narnia, and we’re thrilled to be their home for years to come.”

The move into the land of Aslan seems to represent a further step away from the indie roots of the Lady Bird writer/director, following her venture into all things Barbie this summer.

Barbie will hit cinemas on 21st July, and will star Australian actor Margot Robbie as the titular character. Ryan Gosling will appear as her on-screen boyfriend Ken, and the cast also features Elf star Will Ferrell, Superbad’s Michael Cera, and Sex Education’s Emma Mackey.

“If you love Barbie, this movie is for you. If you hate Barbie, this movie is for you”, the trailer says.

We can’t wait to see it, and indeed what Greta Gerwig does with the world of Narnia!

Barbie hits cinemas on 21st July.
