Graham Norton took a moment during his Virgin Radio show at the weekend to pay tribute to Sinéad O’Connor, who died last week at the age of 56.

Over the course of her career, the Irish artist released 10 albums, and had a global smash hit with Nothing Compares 2 U, while also using her platform to raise awareness of her political views and experiences with religion and mental health.

Speaking about the death of the singer, Graham said: “It's weird how these things can affect us, you know, because we don't know these people and yet that one, it hit me like a ton of bricks. I adored her. I didn’t know her. I interviewed her several times.”

Presenting The Graham Norton Show with Waitrose from Ireland on Saturday (29th July), he continued: “In Ireland, it’s been just enormous, the outpouring of love for Sinéad. Somebody on the radio was just saying that she was that combination of fearless and fragile, and I thought that was absolutely her. And it’s such a dangerous combination, but such an adorable combination.

“Interviewing her, the other thing that struck me about her was just how open she was. It’s sort of off-putting as an interviewer to meet someone who is so open and unguarded and you know will answer any question totally honestly. But I just loved her, I just thought she was wonderful.”

Graham recalled O’Connor appearing on his television chat show, saying: “Her performance on the show was just electrifying, the people in the audience who couldn't have cared less about Sinead O'Connor when they heard she was on, by the end of this performance were just enthralled by her.

“What a fabulous, fabulous live performer she was.”

Elsewhere, tributes have been pouring in from the music world, with Pink singing Nothing Compares 2 U.

Meanwhile, Foo Fighters and Alanis Morissette performed a version of Mandinka.

Listen to The Graham Norton Radio Show every Saturday AND Sunday from 9.30 am on Virgin Radio or catch up on-demand here. Graham is on his holidays from this week, so Nick Grimshaw will be presenting The Graham Norton Radio Show with Waitrose from this weekend (5th August) and throughout August.
