Strictly Come Dancing star Amy Dowden has told fans that she is feeling “tender, bruised and sore” in her latest health update.

The professional dancer was diagnosed with stage three breast cancer in May, and she recently said she has undergone a mastectomy. Last week, she shared the news that a second type of cancer has been found and she won't be competing in this year's 2023 series.

In a new Instagram post, the Welsh dancer advised fans that she has now begun chemotherapy.

Sharing pictures and videos of herself in hospital, she wrote: “I’ve decided I want to share my chemo journey to help raise awareness, hopefully get others checking and for understanding what we go through. Port fitted! Wasn’t looking forward to it. Wasn’t easy… my veins!”

The post continued: “Feeling tender, bruised and sore but the port will help massively over the next few weeks and allow me to dance when I feel well enough.”

Explaining the chemotherapy process, the 32-year-old added: “A port sits under the skin and the tube goes along my vein to the heart giving safe access for chemo ( I believe, I’m no dr!) Rrrrrrright that’s ✔️done!”

Friends and fans were quick to comment on the post, with fellow professional Gorka Marquez, writing: “🙏🏻💛💛 you got this Amy”

Motsi Mabuse added: “❤️ thinking of you . Sending love and I am very sure you are inspiring and giving courage to everyone ❤️”

Former Strictly contestant Kym Marsh wrote: ‘Brave lady xx.’

One fan wrote: “Ports are wonderful things. Saves so much hassle of searching for veins. Mine is 11 years old now. You got this ❤️”

Amy joined hit BBC show Strictly Come Dancing in 2017 and has been paired with celebs such as Tom Fletcher and James Bye. In 2019, she was a finalist in the 17th series with TV presenter Karim Zeroual.

Last week she surprised her fellow Strictly pros at rehearsals.
