It turns out Gogglebox star Mica Ven had plenty of fans going into Celebrity MasterChef.

The former armchair critic is one of the first taking part in the highly-anticipated 18th season of the beloved BBC series, alongside the likes of Dave Benson Phillips, Strictly’s Dianne Buswell and singer Jamelia.

Ahead of Wednesday’s (2nd August) series debut, Mica sat down with virginradio.co.uk to chat through her involvement in Celebrity MasterChef, and while also admitting to being starstruck by her fellow contestants, it seems they were equally enamoured with her experience on the Channel 4 telly-watching series.

Mica explained: “I walked into the first day and I just felt like, wow, I'm in here with the likes of them? I just felt like nah, someone's pulling my leg! I mean, like Dani Dyer and Marcus Brigstocke, Richie Anderson, James Buckley?

“I think, for me, what was nice is that when I walked in, they were all like, ‘Oh my god, it’s you!”

Mica admitted all of her day one contestants, made up of reality star Dyer, actor Buckley, comedian Brigstocke and radio personality Anderson, were all just as excited to see her as she was to see them, and they all were massive fans of Gogglebox too.

“I'm always still so amazed at who actually watches that that show,” Mica continued. “You have to remember, I was on there as one of the regulars on the regular episodes, so I know it goes out all the time, but you can't help but just see yourself as just the regular. It's just Meesh, I'm a regular, so when I'm there with the likes of those, it’s like wow, I'm in here with them! It took a while to get into that because I am such a regular at heart.

Speaking of being a regular, Mica was convinced that the call from producers to take part in the fan-favourite competition was originally a “prank”.

The TV star said: "MasterChef wants me, really? They meant it, and I was just so blown away, I was so gassed.”

It turns out the telly staple is a “huge foodie” due to her family’s love of cooking, which helped quell any nerves she had upon realising the MasterChef offer was indeed true.

Mica shared: “I grew up in my granny's kitchen. My grandma's a typical West Indian woman, and all that she does and is known for is cooking. I was completely obsessed with her and her ability to be able to cook.

“We're a huge family, just by saying there's some curry goat cooked, everybody comes round. I wanted to be able to have that thing myself. Just being able to cook and everyone just diving in for my food. I'm naturally a foodie. I naturally cook all the time. It was surreal being chosen [for MasterChef]."

Celebrity MasterChef returns to BBC One and BBC iPlayer on Wednesday 2nd August at 9pm.
