DIY SOS tugs on the heartstrings at the best of times, but a Strictly special had fans reaching for the tissues in the 'emotional' episode.

The DIY SOS team joined forces with familiar faces from Strictly Come Dancing for a special episode.

Katya Jones, Luba Mushtuck and Graziano Di Prima took part in the show, as they helped to makeover a performing arts school to make it fully accessible.

They transformed a venue in Wallsend, North Tyneside into a home for the disability-inclusive performing arts charity, True Colours.

Katya met a passionate dancer called Charis, who has Down syndrome and had just lost her dad.

Charis was shown performing a tribute to her late father in a dance show.

She performed to Stand By Me by Ben E King.

Katya was in tears, and Nick Knowles was visibly emotional.

Viewers at home were all crying too.

"Charis. You have made me a sobbing mess," wrote one.

"I’m only 20 minutes into the Wallsend build and am already in bits. Amazing people helping more amazing people!" said another.

"I’ve never watched #DIYSOS before and it seems I’ve chosen the motherload of emotional episodes with this strictly special. It’s joyful and simultaneously gruelling," added another.

One fan added: "This disabled arts school on #DIYSOS is positively inspirational. All getting a bit emotional here. So pleased Nick, the guys and volunteers doing all this work to make their dance space work for them. Lovely to see #Strictly stars come on board and get involved. Great episode."

"OK….. who’s cutting onions" joked one fan.
