Ed Sheeran has come up with a tune inspired by classic US sitcom Friends, and he has serenaded one of its stars with it.
When you think of songs related to Friends, a couple probably spring to mind: Smelly Cat and, of course, the iconic theme tune, I'll Be There for You, by The Rembrandts. And now singer-songwriter Sheeran has added to the genre with American Town, which features on his new album, Autumn Variations.
Sheeran gave fans a sneak preview of it yesterday, and one very famous fan got to hear it close-up and personal.
Courteney Cox, who played Monica Gellar in the American comedy, stood alongside the best-selling artist as he played her a snippet of the song.
“I wrote a song inspired by Friends,” he told Cox as they stood in a kitchen, before bursting into song. “We ate Chinese food in small white boxes, live the life we saw in Friends, your room, it barely fits the mattress,” he sang, as his actor pal looked on.
At the end of the video clip, Cox asked: “Wait, that was really about the show Friends?”. He replied: “Well, inspired by it, yeah, because you eat Chinese food in small white boxes, we lived the life we saw in Friends,”
The US star joked: “Do I get paid?”
Friends aired over ten seasons, from 1994 to 2004, and starred Cox, Jennifer Aniston, Lisa Kudrow, Matt LeBlanc, Matthew Perry and David Schwimmer.
Sheeran’s new album, American Town, which lands next Friday, 29th September, is his second record to come out this year. He released his most recent record “-” (Subtract) in May.
And it isn’t just American superstars who are experiencing the hitmaking artist’s intimate performances, as he has also been surprising fans by recording songs in their own living rooms. Those tracks will then end up on an upcoming album of live recordings. Read about it here.
Autumn Variations will be released on 29th September.
