A proposed moratorium on deep-sea mining has found support in the unlikeliest place, Westminster, in a surprising U-turn by the UK government.
There’s nothing wrong with a U-turn if you’re going in the wrong direction! Thérèse Coffey announced the very stylish handbrake 180 last week that we are now adding our voice to 24 other countries calling for a ‘precautionary pause’ on exploitation licences until the impact on marine ecosystems had been properly assessed. The temporary ban is being discussed this week during ongoing negotiations in Jamaica at the International Seabed Authority, the global regulator for mining in international waters. Said CEO of ocean conservation charity Blue Marine Clare Brook:
“It is vital that we exercise the precautionary principle and find ways of producing minerals necessary for the transition to net zero that do not cause catastrophic and permanent destruction of fragile ocean biodiversity,”

Door security cameras are there, normally speaking, to catch people doing bad things, doorbell pranks or parcel thieves. It is pretty rare for someone to catch a selfless random act of kindness but that’s exactly what happened!
On Halloween night in Oregon last week the homeowners were out but left a pumpkin full of sweets and chocolate outside their door with a note above it which read “Sorry we missed you, be kind and only take a few pieces.”
But either the sign was ignored or there were a lot of hands to feed because by the time a group of teenagers arrived, the pumpkin was empty. But rather than trick in the absence of a treat, the whole gang of kids donated some of their sweet treats to replenish the pumpkin, knowing it would make little difference to them, but a possibly heart sinking feeling for a youngster later. When Jennifer, the carver of that pumpkin came home and discovered the video, she uploaded it and of course it went viral. I love stories that shatter the stereotypes and narratives that we are fed every day, that teenagers all want to stab us, they’re mostly lovely and that’s the truth!
