Doctor Who's 2023 Christmas special, called The Church on Ruby Road, has unveiled a surprising cast member, and shared some brand new images.

The Fifteenth Doctor, played by Ncuti Gatwa, takes over the TARDIS for his first epic adventure, and he will team up with Ruby Sunday. She will be played by Doctor Who debutant Millie Gibson.

And Millie isn’t the only newcomer, as a familiar - and somewhat unexpected - face is set to feature. It has been revealed that presenter Davina McCall will be playing herself in the epsiode.

On joining the hit sci-fi show, the My Mum, Your Dad star said: “It is beyond an honour to be asked to appear in not only Doctor Who but also Ncuti’s first episode as the new Doctor. It was such an extraordinary experience and Russell has written you all a Christmas delight! Now I just can’t wait for everyone to see it!”

The episode, which will air on BBC One on Christmas Day, will also feature Michelle Greenidge from It's a Sin as Ruby’s mum Carla, Angela Wynter as Ruby’s grandmother Cherry, and EastEnders legend Anita Dobson as Mrs Flood.

A synopsis for the upcoming episode explains: "Long ago on Christmas Eve, a baby was abandoned in the snow. Today, Ruby Sunday meets the Doctor, stolen babies, goblins and perhaps the secret of her birth."

Doctor Who showrunner Russell T Davies said: "From Day One in this job, I wanted Doctor Who back on Christmas Day! And with Ncuti, Millie, Davina and the Goblin King, I hope it’s a feast for all the family!"

The Christmas Day episode makes up a bumper line-up on the BBC, which includes festive episodes from the likes of Strictly Come Dancing, Call The Midwife, Death in Paradise, Beyond Paradise, Ghosts and plenty more. Read more here.

The Church On Ruby Road will air on 25th December on BBC One in the UK and Ireland, on BBC iPlayer in the UK, and on Disney Plus for the rest of world.
