The 2024 Emmy Awards saw big wins for the likes of Succession and The Bear, however one much-loved show remained criminally overlooked.
The Emmys had been delayed for months due to the writers’ and actors’ strikes, but finally happened in Los Angeles overnight (Monday 16th January).
Despite being up for seven awards this year, Better Call Saul didn’t pick up any prizes, and in fact has NEVER won an Emmy despite being up for over 53 awards across the years.
This year, the Breaking Bad prequel was up for Outstanding Drama Series, Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series for Bob Odenkirk as Saul Goodman, and Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series for Rhea Seehorn as Kim Wexler. It was also nominated for awards in the Picture Editing and Sound Mixing categories and had two nominations in the Outstanding Writing for a Drama Series category.
The seven unsuccessful nominations add to 46 previous snubs for Better Call Saul. Bob Odenkirk has been nominated a total of six times for best lead actor without winning. And how Rhea Seehorn failed to win for her incredible performance as the partner and eventual wife of Jimmy/Saul is astonishing.
Co-created by Vince Gilligan and Peter Gould, Better Call Saul told the origin story of Saul Goodman, and mixed new characters (such as Kim) with existing favourites from Breaking Bad. For example, Giancarlo Esposito as Gus Fring and Jonathan Banks as Mike Ehrmantraut both played big parts in the prequel series. Bryan Cranston and Aaron Paul even showed up to reprise their roles as Walter White and Jesse Pinkman as it headed towards its conclusion.
Whilst it bizarrely missed out on any Emmy success, the series proved to be hugely popular with fans and critics alike. It currently has a 98 percent critic rating on review aggregating site Rotten Tomatoes, and a fan score of 96 percent.
There were six seasons (totalling 63 episodes) of Better Call Saul, which ran between 2015 and 2022.
