Blue Lights actress Joanne Crawford has hinted at some extreme moments as series two lands on BBC One tonight.

(Spoilers for series one of Blue Lights below!)

The Northern Irish police drama returns tonight (15th April) and the PSNI team are up against a new threat after the McIntyre family fall in series one.

Joanne returns as Helen McNally, and she’s once again joined by Sian Brooke, Martin McCann, Katherine Devlin and Nathan Braniff as the police force desperately battles against not just increasing crime levels, but also minimal staffing.

Speaking exclusively to virginradio.co.uk, Joanne confessed that the newly promoted McNally will face plenty of challenges in series two, which puts her team in “extra danger”.

She explained: “Low resources does essentially mean that there is extra danger for her people. She's having to answer to the levels above. As she moves up through her rank, say from Constable to Sergeant Inspector, she never really let go of what was with her to begin with.

“She still is very concerned in an interpersonal way with her staff. Which management perhaps aren't too interested in. They kind of wanted to look at the numbers, it's the first time we see her with a file of statistics.”

On what fans can expect from Blue Lights series two, Joanne went on to tease: “I’m really impressed by how quickly we get into familiar territory. We're seeing all these other faces that we're familiar with, but then in sweeps a very different storyline. The peril kicks off at a quite a high level quite quickly.”

The official synopsis for Blue Lights series two reads: "In series two, Grace, Annie and Tommy are growing up fast as police officers, but nothing can prepare them for the turmoil they face every day.

"It’s a year since the fall of the McIntyre crime gang and the vacuum has been filled by rival gangs, all competing for dominance. Constable Shane Bradley is drafted in to help, but his motivations are unclear. Tommy is dangerously seduced by the world of intelligence policing, while Grace struggles to deal with her son’s absence, and growing feelings for fellow officer Stevie.

"As a young loyalist threatens to take over the city, the officers face a major gangland feud – culminating in a violent and devastating confrontation."

Blue Lights series two begins on BBC One at 9pm tonight (Monday 15th April). All episodes are now available on BBC iPlayer.
