Tom Cruise is feeling the need...the need for speed as he celebrates 38 years of Top Gun.

The Hollywood leading man has shared his appreciation for the genre-defining flick, which came out on 16th May 1986, back when he was only 24 and just starting to make his mark in the acting world.

He took to social media to reminisce about the blockbuster hit, writing: “It’s incredible to look back on the thirty-eight years of Top Gun. To the fans who have been with us since the start, there wouldn’t be a Top Gun Day without you.”

Alongside the thoughtful caption on both Instagram and X, Tom shared a number of photos from the original movie, as well as some snaps from the set of its sequel, Top Gun: Maverick

The 2022 sequel was released 36 years after Top Gun, and surpassed its predecessor both critically and commercially, earning £1.18 billion across the world, making it the second highest-grossing film of 2022.

With Top Gun: Maverick being such a huge success, it would make sense for there to be a third instalment of the TG franchise, and producer Jerry Bruckheimer has previously teased the idea of a third film.

In March, Bruckheimer told People Magazine: “We're working on [Top Gun 3]. We pitched Tom a story he liked. But he's a very in-demand actor, and he's got a lot of movies lined up, so we have to wait and see."

Someone who is definitely on board for another Top Gun is Maverick actress Jennifer Connelly, who played Penny Benjamin in the recent high-octane adventure.

"I haven't seen anything," she explained Entertainment Tonight. "I had a casual chat with my friend, Joe Kosinski, who directed it, who I worked with twice now. I'm his biggest fan. I think he's so great. [I talked to him] about the possibility of it, but I don't know anything concrete."
