Pirates of the Caribbean actor Tamayo Perry has died aged 49.

The actor, who was also a lifeguard and professional surfer, was fatally attacked by a shark while in the water on Sunday, 23rd June, Honolulu’s emergency services have confirmed.

According to Deadline, officials say the On Stranger Tides star was pronounced dead on Malaekahana Beach, Oahu, after suffering “more than one possible bites.”

As well as starring in the Disney franchise alongside actors including Johnny Depp, Penelope Cruz and Geoffrey Rush, Perry was also known for acting in Lost, Hawaii Five-0 and most recently, a short-film entitled The Bridge.

Perry was known locally for his surfing and work as a lifeguard with the Honolulu Ocean Safety department, however.

Acting Honolulu Ocean Safety chief Kurt Lager said following the news breaking about Perry’s death: “Tamayo Perry was a lifeguard loved by all. He is well known on the North Shore, a professional surfer known around the world.

“Tamayo’s personality was infectious and as much as people loved him, he loved everyone else more. Our condolences go out to Tamayo’s family and the whole lifeguard ohana."

Meanwhile mayor Rick Blangiardi called Perry “a legendary waterman and highly respected,” and shared that his death was a “tragic loss” for the community. “He grew up right over here, and [was] just a great member of our ocean safety team,” he shared.

Deaths from shark attacks are incredibly rare, but can occur, often as a result of sharks confusing humans (especially surfers) in the water for their usual prey, such as sea lions, turtles, or other ocean mammals.
