Earlier this year, ITV announced that the upcoming series 14 will bring the drama to an end. Sharing a link to a Royal Television Society article about Vera, Riley wrote on X: “Heading up to Newcastle to film my last few scenes for Vera and reading this article."
He added: “Weird that someone is chopping onions on the train.”
Vera has been on our screens since 2011, with lead character, Detective Chief Inspector Vera Stanhope, assisted by two Detective Sergeants, Joe Ashworth and Aiden Healy, as she investigates crimes in Northumberland.
Fans commented on Riley’s post, expressing their own sadness that the show’s next series will be its last.
One wrote: “Have been a fan of Vera since the beginning, seen every episode will be sad to see it end, but what an amazing run the series has had, look forward to seeing you all in other things. You’ve all been fabulous! xx”
Someone else told him: “The icon status is cemented - everyone has been brilliant in this series.”
Another added: “Can't even imagine 😪 It's given us all such pleasure over the years and we will continue to watch repeats! We've grown to love you all dearly and will miss you all terribly. Thank you all so much for the entertainment… Sending huge hugs to you and the crew 🤗”
Announcing the end of her beloved character in April, lead-actor Blethyn said in the statement: “Working on Vera has been a joy from beginning to end and I’m sad to be saying Cheerio. But I am so proud of our achievements over the last fourteen years.
“I’ll be forever grateful to the wonderful Ann Cleeves who created Vera, and to Elaine Collins who saw fit to cast me in the role.”
She added: “The Producers, dream cast and crew have been fabulous and I'm going to miss them, but I won't forget their huge talent, the camaraderie, laughter or kindness we shared nor the friendship of the people of the northeast and our fans worldwide."
She signed off: "Thank you from the bottom of my heart."
Series 14 of Vera will consist of two episodes, both of which will be two hours long.
Vera’s 14th and final series will air on ITV1 and ITV in the future.
