After smashing the Emmy nominations, one Baby Reindeer star was left overwhelmed with her historic recognition.
The wildly successful Netflix drama scored 11 nominations including three for creator Richard Gadd. Jessica Gunning is also nominated for her portrayal of Martha.
In the Supporting Actress category alongside Gunning is co-star Nava Mau. She played therapist Teri, the love interest of Gadd’s character Donny. The series followed Donny and his ever-growing desperation to lose stalker Martha (Gunning).

After landing a coveted Emmy nomination, it was confirmed that Nava had made history by becoming the first Latina trans woman to land in the Best Supporting Actress in a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie.
During a chat with Deadline after receiving the incredible news, the actress admitted to Deadline she had been “crying for 45 minutes with overwhelming joy.”
She revealed: “For trans actors, we just don’t get a lot of opportunities to develop our craft, grow as artists, and to be recognised for all that we are and all that we can be.”
“It has been a priceless experience being a part of this show. Every step of the way, I could feel the way the experience was transforming me, my life, and what feels possible. To be recognised by my peers in the Academy is a celebration of that transformation.”
Nava joins a esteemed list of trans talent to make it onto the Emmys nominations list. In 2014, Laverne Cox became the first trans person to be nominated in the acting category after winning over hearts in Netflix’s Orange is the New Black.
Pose star Michaela Jaé Rodriguez followed her seven years later in 2021 by becoming the first trans woman to win an Emmy in a major acting category.
Baby Reindeer’s Nava will not only face-off against castmate Gunning for the prize, but she’ll also hope to see off competition from Dakota Fanning for Ripley, Lily Gladstone for Under the Bridge, Aja Naomi King for Lessons in Chemistry, Diane Lane for Feud: Capote vs. The Swans, and Kali Reis for True Detective: Night Country.
Leading the way in terms of Emmy nominations are samurai epic Shogun with 25, stressful restaurant drama The Bear, which has 23, comedy Only Murders in the Building with 21, and anthology series True Detective: Night Country, which gained 19.
The Crown has 18 nods, including Imelda Staunton for best lead actress in a drama. Jonathan Pryce, Dominic West, Elizabeth Debicki and Lesley Manville also have nominations, as does Claire Foy.
The Bear’s nominations include one for Olivia Colman, formerly of The Crown, and nods for Jeremy Allen White, Ayo Edebiri, and Son of Rambow’s Will Poulter.
Other Brits recognised are Gary Oldman and Jack Lowden for Slow Horses, Idris Elba for Hijack, Jonathan Bailey for Fellow Travelers. Michaela Coel, Matt Berry and Juno Temple are among the other nominees. The Emmy winners will be announced on 15th September.
