Alongside Maxine Peake and Jason Isaacs, both hoped to take on the role of Shaun Ryder's parents, Jack O'Connell is set to portray the singer's early life and his journey into the 'Madchester' era of the late-1980s.

Director Matt Greenhalgh has described the Happy Mondays as "the last true working-class band", and describes how they "mainlined into his musical DNA when he was 16 years old".

Speaking about Ryder's biopic, Greenalgh thanks AGC Studios for feeling "honoured to be able to author the only rock’n’roll movie I want to see”

Production for the film is set to start in January 2020.
