Despite him denying the rumours, it's been confirmed today that Mads Mikkelsen is set to replace Johnny Depp as Gellert Grindelwald in the Fantastic Beasts franchise.

The Hannibal and Rogue One actor will be stepping into the role after Depp was asked to resign by Warner Bros last month.

Fans are excited by the news, excitedly tweeting comparison pics to see how Mads will match up. He loves playing a villain and is very good at it too.

Another actor who fans were keen for was Colin Farrell as - spoiler alert - he already played Grindelwald in disguise for the first film, Fantastic Beasts and Where To Find Them.

Sadly he wasn't available as he's currently filming The Batman for Warner Bros, where he plays The Penguin.

Not much is known about the third film yet, apart from it mostly being set in Rio de Janeiro in the run-up to World War II.

The release date has been delayed to July 15, 2022, and the cast are all set to return, including Eddie Redmayne, Jude Law, Katherine Waterston, Dan Fogler, Alison Sudol, Ezra Miller.

Are you pleased with Johnny's replacement?
