Dame Emma Thompson is set to star as the wart-riddled, pigtailed-child-launching sadistic headmistress Miss Trunchbull in a musical remake off the Roald Dahl classic Matilda.

Newcomer Alisha Weir will play the young genius, plus Lashana Lynch as everyone's dream teacher Miss Honey in the future project based on the 2010 stage production 'Matilda the Musical'.

Director of the musical Matthew Warchus is joining the original playwright Dennis Kelly to adapt the screenplay which will also featuring the music and mind-boggling lyrics from Tim Minchin.

Warchus said: "Matilda will be an imaginative and fresh retelling of the award-winning musical featuring talented young newcomers, alongside established stars.

"I look forward to introducing this beloved and powerful story to a new generation of fans around the world."

The well-loved novel was previously adapted for the big screen in 1996 with Danny DeVito as Matilda's mean father with Mara Wilson playing the infamous child protege with a gift for telekinesis.
