Viewers compare Richard Madeley to Alan Partridge after bizarre interview

There can be little denying that presenter Richard Madeley has created some absolute television gold during his long broadcasting career. The fact that sometimes, like today, he does it entirely unintentionally just adds to the pure joy of it all.

On this morning’s Good Morning Britain (15th July), Madeley went full Partridge during an interview with Albie Amankona from the organisation Conservatives Against Racism For Equality.

After introducing the guest, who was sitting in the studio, Madeley, rather oddly, started talking to him while looking in completely the opposite direction. The presenter launched into his opening question, saying “We’ll talk to you about the big bubbling under story of the week, the racism story, in a couple of minutes, but as a Conservative, what do you make of this? Do you see this as the wagging finger of the nanny state or a perfectly reasonable…”

He paused, seemingly noticing that everyone else in the studio was looking somewhat confused, and then, slightly shocked to see his guest sitting to his right, said, “Oh! You’re there! Sorry, I thought you were on the screen. I’m talking to you like you’re in Winchester or something!”

It turns out that poor Richard was looking at an image of Albie on one of the screens in front of him, thinking that he was talking to him remotely via video-link, completely oblivious to the fact that the rather confused guest was sitting just a few feet away from him!

Admittedly, a lot of us have forgotten how to interact with other humans after lockdown, but Richard has taken it to a new level with this gaffe!

Scrambling to get on top of the interview again, and referring to the fact that he thought he was talking to him in, “Winchester or something,” Richard asked Albie: “Where are you from, actually?”

“I’m from Chiswick,” Albie said. “So not far away from there.”

Slightly nonsensically, but absolutely brilliantly, Richard responded by saying, “I sort of saw you in Chiswick in my mind’s eye.”

Viewers of Good Morning Britain obviously went straight on social media to comment about just how much Richard Madeley reminded them of the much-loved Steve Coogan comedy character, Alan Partridge.

One commenter said “Richard Madeley has another Alan Partridge moment thinking he is talking to a guy miles away while sitting next to him in the studio.”

Another added, “Richard Madeley on #gmb has me in stitches he seriously just can’t stop himself.”

Someone else said, “I'm in disbelief. Richard Madeley Partridge not realising that the guest speaker was in the studio sat next to him. Priceless telly.”

Richard Madeley has been guest presenting on Good Morning Britain since Piers Morgan left the show earlier this year. And whilst we don’t know if he will be taking the job permanently, if he keeps offering up gems like this, we hope to see him in the chair next to Susanna Reid for a long while yet!
