The #FreeBritney campaign is celebrating a victory, as a Los Angeles Superior Court judge has said that the pop icon can hire her own lawyer in the battle over her conservatorship.

Britney’s legal victory came on Wednesday (July 14th) when she was permitted to name Mathew S Rosengart as her new counsel in the conservatorship case which controls much of her life, finances, and career. Britney has been under a conservatorship since 2008, with her father Jamie currently being the sole person in charge of her $60m (£43m) estate.

Whilst on the surface it may not seem like much, Wednesday’s decision actually represents a big win for Britney, as she attempts to wrestle back control of her life from the conservatorship. Until now, she had not been able to choose her own legal representation. Her longtime court-appointed lawyer, Samuel D. Ingham III, recently resigned.

After the hearing, Britney took to social media to celebrate. She posted a video of her horse-riding and doing cartwheels. In the caption, she told her adoring fans that she feels she is making progress in her case. She said, “Coming along, folks… coming along!!!!! New with real representation today… I feel GRATITUDE and BLESSED!!!!”

She went on to say, “Thank you to my fans who are supporting me… You have no idea what it means to me be supported by such awesome fans !!!! God bless you all!!!!!”

Fans commented in their thousands, including some big names. Musician Ariana Grande said “YOU ARE SO VERY LOVED AND SUPPORTED.”

Meanwhile, Britney’s boyfriend, Sam Asghari posted, “Internet is about to explode #freebritney.” Britney has claimed that the conservatorship means she is not allowed to marry Sam.

Recently, the likes of Madonna, Mariah Carey, Cher, Miley Cyrus, Christina Aguilera and Justin Timberlake have all expressed her support for Britney. Now, US politicians from both sides of the aisle, such as Republican Ted Cruz and Democrat Elizabeth Warren, have also voiced their concerns about the conservatorship.

During the hearing, Britney tearfully told the court, “I would like to charge my father with conservatorship abuse. I want to press charges against my father today. I want an investigation into my dad.” She also said that the arrangement “is allowing my dad to ruin my life” and said she is scared of him.
