The new series of Bake Off has got off to a great start, with some excellent new contestants baking up a storm in the famous tent. But who said goodbye last night, after failing to rise to the challenge during bread week? Read on to find out (obviously there are spoilers ahead).

In last night’s episode, the 10 remaining bakers were required to create a crispy and airy focaccia for their signature dish. On it, they could put any topping of their choice. It’s safe to say that some of the bakers did better than others!

Indeed, Paul Hollywood offered his first Hollywood handshake of the series during the show. Italian Giuseppe was the grateful recipient, having baked a foccacia that contained olives from his hometown Gaeta. In typically wholesome Bake Off fashion, he used his father-in-law’s oil.

Paul was suitably impressed, telling Giuseppe: “The thing that I particularly like is that you haven’t gone overboard with flavour and made a beautifully light focaccia, and you get a mouthful of everything in every bite and that’s all focaccia is. I think it’s beautiful, well done.”

Giuseppe didn’t impress everyone last night though. Not long after he received his handshake, he was greeted by presenter Noel Fielding, who popped over to see how his technical challenge was going. As the host walked up to him, Giuseppe said: “Hello Neil!”

Noel replied: “Neil or Noel?”

“Noel!” Giuseppe said.

“I thought we were close,” the host joked.

Whilst Giuseppe’s baking wowed the judges, things didn’t go quite so well for Rochica, who became the latest contestant to be eliminated from the new series

Prue Leith and Paul decided that it was time for the 27-year-old to leave after she served up some underbaked breadsticks in the technical challenge.

Rochisda said: “I have really, really enjoyed it and not everybody gets to bake in the Bake Off tent, so I’m proud of where I’ve got to.”

Meanwhile, one of the early favourites to win this year’s Bake Off, Brighton-based Jurgen, who is from Germany and who had been star baker in both of the first two weeks, had a bit of a nightmare in some of the challenges, but survived to bake another week.

The Great British Bake Off continues next Tuesday at 8pm on Channel 4 with dessert week. Yum!
