If there was one thing scarier than Ghostface in the 2000 horror flick Scream 3, it was definitely Courtney Cox’s unfortunate hair do.

We’re not arguing that the early noughties were some kind of fashion paragon, but even Courteney herself has been haunted by the very look most people remember her for while starring in the Scream franchise.

The Friends star is reuniting with David Arquette and Neve Campbell in the latest slasher flick Scream (2022), also known as Scream 5. She’s reprising her role as reporter Gale Weathers, but luckily, she’s leaving the haircut back in the 2000s.

Ahead of the film’s release, Courteney joined her co-stars David and Neve on The Drew Barrymore show, where she admitted the real reason she ended up with the unforgettable ‘short fringe’.

When the subject of ‘the bangs’ came up, Courteney explained: “That was the worst. I forgot about that. There’s nothing worse. That was a big lesson in life because that will forever be on film. And we only had one set, one set of bangs.

“I remember they were cut on the set. You’re supposed to have a thing that starts back here, far back. And that’s where the part goes for the bangs. For some reason, someone put it here and started cutting it. And I thought, ‘I don’t have a choice now.'”

And there you have it - the true story behind one of the most unforgettable fashion moments in Hollywood history. Courteney has since grown her hair out, so it’s unlikely we’ll ever see the short fringe again.

The new movie Scream flick will be set 25 years after the original streak of brutal murders shocked Woodsboro. As if the town hadn’t been through enough, a new killer is set to don the Ghostface mask and target a new group of teenagers.

The film will see the return of stars from the previous instalments in the horror franchise, and new cast members this time round include Jenna Ortega from You, and Melissa Barrera from In the Heights.

All of the abovementioned actors appear on the movie poster shared last month, which includes 12 of the film’s characters in the shadow of the iconic, and always terrifying, Ghostface mask. The bottom of the poster contains the tagline: “The killer is on this poster.”

Your guess is as good as ours as to who the villain might be, but we can probably rule out Jenna Ortega’s character, Tara Carpenter.

The film’s trailer shows a scene which is reminiscent of the famous Drew Barrymore death in the 1996 movie, and suggests that she doesn’t last long.

This will be the first Scream film not to be directed by Wes Craven, who died in 2015. It will instead be helmed by Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett.

Scream will be in cinemas on January 14th 2022.
