The second episode of the intense ITV drama aired on Sunday night - and Vicky McClure returned to active duty after the high-octane debut. (Spoilers ahead!)
Four days after Adrian Lester’s veteran bomb disposal expert Joel Nutkin (lovingly referred to as Nut) met an explosive end, Vicky McClure’s Lana Washington - or Wash for short - and the team waste no time getting back into the field despite the huge loss.
Wash is asked to give evidence of what happened to a committee, with Commander Bregman at the helm. Kerry Godliman makes her very first appearance as Bomb Data Centre expert Sonia Reeves, who can easily break down an explosion into microscopic scientific detail.
Finding the culprit of the devastating first bombing is proving more difficult than first thought, with Andy Phelan, the original hostage from episode one, unveiled as a white nationalist who is part of extremist group English Flag. Their leader appears on the ITV News later to suggest the recent bombing was an Islamic revenge attack.
Wash isn’t so sure of this latest news, as she believes the device used was too sophisticated for a group like Isis. Despite this, the committee decides the tragedy was a ‘tageted attack by an Islamist group against an active white supremacist’.
Of course, the funeral for Nut is the emotional focal point for Wash and the team. Wash helps carry his coffin during his military send-off, and in a teary conversation with Nut’s estranged wife Jaz, it’s clear Nut put his career ahead of his family at all times.
“It’s always ‘my team needs me’ with Nut…like we didn’t” Jaz sobbed.
Episode two also opened up the potential of a new love triangle between Wash, colleague DI Thom Youngblood and mechanic Karl, but much like all good romance story lines, work drama will always get in the way. (Cue the workplace tension!)
With funeral hangovers all round, the team are tasked to check out a seemingly derelict building, after the mysterious villain’s van shows up outside. Inside appears to be the base for bomb-making, although something doesn’t sit right with Wash.
“Have you ever seen a bomb factory that neat and tidy? What have we got? OCD terrorists?” she asked, before finding a suicide detonator - could this be clue to the true detonator’s identity?
With no rest for the wicked, Wash and her potential love interest Youngblood head over to another bombing, this time at a mosque, further confusing the true intent of the bombers.
Despite finding - and then questioning - several leads, fans watching at home reckon they’ve sussed out who the true bombers are.
With Karl’s shady past making itself clear as time goes on, some fans believed he could be behind the terrible bombings.
Taking to Twitter to share their theories, one fan wrote: “Calling #triggerpoint early..it’s all organised by a right wing British group with ex military connections that are trying to whip up hatred.. Karl could be involved!”
Another tweeted: “Currently suspect no 1: Karl "The Mechanic" = the bomber #Triggerpoint” while a third commented: “I don’t trust that Karl guy, I think he may be involved in the explosion in some way.”
