While we’re still waiting for the penultimate series, could there be a prequel of The Crown in the works?

Fans are feverish with anticipation after rumours started swirling that the royal drama might continue after the main series comes to an end.

Netflix are keeping tight-lipped about the potential follow-on show, but according to The Daily Mail, there could be as many as five spin-off series in the works.

The report suggests The Crown creator Peter Morgan and producer Left Bank are in conversations with the streaming giant to take a look at the monarchy in the first half of the 20th century.

It would likely cover events pre-series one, including the death of Queen Victoria in 1901, and the abdication crisis in 1936, which saw Edward VIII leave the throne after falling for American socialite Wallis Simpson.

If all of the plans go ahead, the new spin-offs (potentially five of them!) will come out in 2024, and be on screens until 2029.

Meanwhile, as we await the fifth season of the hit drama, the show’s bosses are busy working on the sixth and final season, and it seems that Kate Middleton might be part of the story as it heads to a conclusion.

It has been reported that there are plans for the character of Kate to be in season six as a teenager in the beginnings of her relationship with Prince William at St Andrew’s University.

The sixth season of The Crown will focus on the Queen’s reign during the late 90s into the early 2000s, and, as reported by The Sun, the show is seeking someone to play the Duchess of Cambridge.

Before we get to that stage though, there is, of course, the fifth season to look forward to. Set to land on Netflix in November of this year, it will see Imelda Staunton take over the role of Queen Elizabeth II from Olivia Colman.

Jonathan Pryce is set to take over the role of Prince Philip, Lesley Manville will be playing Princess Margaret, taking over from Helena Bonham Carter, and Elizabeth Debicki is the new Princess Diana.

Meanwhile, Dominic West, from The Wire, Pride and Brassic, will take over the role of Prince Charles.
