Good news from Cambridge University Library where one of their most prized possessions, stolen 22 years ago, has made a mysterious return in time for Easter.

Say hello to Charles Darwin’s notebooks, two leather and copper bound field notebooks in which Darwin jotted down his thoughts, theories and musings which led to his so called ‘theory of evolution’ which has now transcended theory and crossed over into undisputed scientific fact. As such, these notebooks were priceless historical documents: “Along with so many others all across the world, I was heartbroken to learn of their loss” said librarian Dr Jessica Gardner, to whom a mysterious package was addressed earlier this week with a typed note that read, simply, ‘Librarian…Happy Easter…(and a big kiss) X’ (which was nice). “My sense of relief at the notebooks’ safe return is profound and almost impossible to adequately express” said Dr Gardener of the notebooks, returned in a pink gift bag, without the thief being caught on CCTV and in perfect condition, undeteriorated from their 22 year stay with the light fingered notebook nicker.

Inspiring news from Canada and ‘the landfill of the future’ where no molecule is left behind!

Say hello to the forward thinking and resourceful 3F Waste Recovery who are from Newfoundland, a beautiful place not dissimilar to the wilder parts of Scotland. If you’re a local farmer, fishing or forestry worker then you can take your industrial waste and dump it like any other landfill, but rather than fill the land with it, 3F operate on a ‘no molecule left behind’ policy, where they have a use for everything that comes in, it’s all repurposed, packaged and sold: Cod skins become ‘whole smoked collaskins’ health food for cats and dogs, nitrogen rich fish compost and even cosmetics made from the processed collagen. Raw tallow from cows, and sheep and moose become natural candles and soap, sheep wool becomes insulation or sheep wool stuffing for duvets and beds, sheep wool/cardboard slug repellent for gardens, they smoke moose and recycle all kinds of bones for pet treats, and produce lanolin wool wax water repellent and lubricant. Cardboard and sawdust is turned into BBQ briquettes. Nothing is wasted and they are adding new products to their shop all the time.
