Australian royalty Kylie Minogue says returning to Neighbours was a heartwarming trip down memory lane.

The singer and actress is making a big comeback to the fan-favourite soap before the credits roll for the final time later this year.

Kylie played Charlene Robinson from 1986 until 1988 and was one half of perhaps the most famous Neighbours couple alongside Jason Donovan.

As part of the tearful goodbye to the long-running series, Kylie is heading back to Ramsey Street one last time, and told Today Extra that returning to the set was “lovely but also emotional.”

"Firstly where has all that time gone? Secondly everything looks exactly the same. Thirdly, Scott, Charlene, Jayne, Harold, it all just came flooding back.

"There was a lot of talking about memories and going back in time."

Kylie left the series after the show launched her incredible career, and she went on to become one of the biggest pop artists of her generation, selling more than 80 million albums worldwide.

The star added: “I had daytime fantasies about being a singer, I was a pop maniac. So to then be part of that industry and I know what it's cost me to have that place, but I know it's given me the opportunities that it's given me.

"It's crazy. I didn't know I would have this impact on people's lives for a long time. It's amazing and very touching."

Ahead of the final episode, Kylie will be joining other Ramsey Street faves including Jason Donovan, Mark Little, Paul Keane and Peter O’Brien.

The final airdate for Neighbours is now confirmed to be Monday 1st August, despite all the best efforts from fans to keep the show alive.

A fan petition to save much-loved soap has racked up over 66,000 signatures, including Neighbours star Lucinda Cowden (Melanie Pearson), but the end of Erinsborough is imminent.

A Network 10 spokesperson told TV Tonight about the schedule Down Under: "From Monday June 13, friends of Ramsay St can tune into double the fun, double the action with double episodes to celebrate the final season of Neighbours."

Neighbours executive producer Jason Herbison said of the closing chapters: "Ramsay Street is eternal and I like to think it will live on in the hearts and minds of the viewers, long after the final scene. I would never, ever blow it up.

"The ending will be a celebration of the past and the present, with the door very much left open for a future."
