Jennifer Hudson will have to make more room on that trophy cabinet for her latest prestigious prize.
The actress and singer has just won her first Tony Award at the 2022 ceremony, after Strange Loop won Best Musical.
Jennifer is an executive producer on the production, and the big win means she’s now the proud owner of an Emmy, Grammy, Oscar and Tony Award, cementing the EGOT status.
The illustrious collection represents excellence in TV, music, film and theatre, and Jennifer is only the second Black woman in history to have the full set, coming in after Whoopi Goldberg.
Andrew Lloyd Webber, Audrey Hepburn, Rita Moreno, and John Legend also boast the incredible achievement.
The talented star won an Emmy for animated short Baba Yaga in 2021, her first Grammy Award in 2009 for her debut album Jennifer Hudson, the Best Supporting Actress Oscar gong in 2007 for Dreamgirls, and finally her Tony, which she picked up during the star-studded ceremony in New York on Sunday (12th June).
Securing the EGOT status has been on Jennifer’s mind for a few years now. She previously told People Magazine in 2020: “I got a dog and named it Oscar, and then I won my Oscar. And then I got a dog and named it Grammy, and then I won my Grammy.
“So I think I should get some dogs and name them Emmy and Tony – and it’ll give me good luck, and I’ll win [They’re] like my good luck charms.”
Strange Loop was the favourite at the Tonys this year, having landed 11 nominations and winning two - Best Musical and Best Book of a Musical.
Best Play went to The Lehman Trilogy, with Simon Russell Beale picking up Best Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role in a Play for his role in the production.
Sam Mendes picked up Best Director for the play, which also landed Best Scenic Design and Best Lighting of a Play.
Company, which began on London’s West End, was named Best Revival of a Musical. Patti LuPone scooped Best Featured Actress in a Musical.
Matt Doyle picked up Best Featured Actor for Company, while Myles Frost won for Best Lead Actor in A Musical for Michael Jackson musical, MJ.
Take Me Out took home Best Revival of a Play. Modern Family star Jesse Tyler Ferguson beat co-stars Jesse Williams and Michael Oberholtzer to win Best Featured Actor in a Play.
