On days like today, when there is a strike affecting London’s transport systems, people in the capital city are finding different ways to get where they need to go. So, it’s handy to know that Transport for London provides a different type of map, that shows how long it takes to walk between stations.
Today (19th August), will see buses, trains, and Tubes hit, as members of the Rail, Maritime, and Transport Union (RMT) and Unite on London Underground will stage a 24-hour strike as their dispute over jobs, working conditions, and pensions continues.
Whilst many Londoners are therefore working from home, some of those who can’t avoid going out and about are getting on their bike, while others are pulling on their walking shoes and get some steps in as an alternative to taking the bus or the tube.
If that applies to you, then you might want to check out Transport for London’s (TfL) walking map.
And the map isn’t just for days like today. If you are rich on time but lacking funds, walking can be a great way to get around the middle of London. In fact, in some of the very central parts of the city, walking between stations can almost be as quick as getting the Tube. Walking is actually a brilliant way to see a city, so if you’re not in a rush, then get strolling rather than Tubing!
For instance, if you are in the West End, then Leicester Square to Covent Garden is just a four-minute walk. Meanwhile, walking from King’s Cross to Euston will take 12 minutes.
And Elephant and Castle to London Bridge takes 22 minutes.
Of the map, TfL says: “Walking can be a quick and easy way to get around, particularly when travelling during the busiest times, which are 5.45am-8.15am and 4pm-5.30pm, Monday to Friday. This map shows how much time it takes to walk between stations on the same line.”

The map has not yet been updated to include the Elizabeth Line.
