Daniel Radcliffe hopes his kids will avoid fame ‘at all costs’

After making his name as Harry Potter, actor and former child star Daniel Radcliffe is hoping his future children won’t find out the hard way about the pitfalls of fame. 

Daniel was only 11 when he first entered the world of showbiz as The Boy Who Lived in Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, and starred in the following nine films in the franchise. 

Speaking to Newsweek, Daniel shared his hopes that his children might enjoy working within film, but is keeping his fingers crossed they will be more adept behind the camera, rather than struggle with fame while in a leading role, which he experienced. 

He explained to the publication: “I want my kids, if and when they exist...I would love them to be around film sets.

“A dream would be for them to come on to a film set and be like ‘God, you know, I’d love to be in the art department. I’d love to be something in the crew.’ Some part of this, but not from that.”

Daniel has previously spoken about his issues with alcohol during Harry Potter’s peak, and while he would support any ambitions his future family might have, he would hope they avoid the spotlight as much as possible. 

He continued: “Film sets are wonderful places. I think a lot of the time it can be wonderful for kids. But it’s really the fame side of it that should be avoided at all costs.”

The Lost City star previously opened up about his struggles with alcohol back in 2019, when he explained how his heavy drinking occurred while filming the last few Harry Potter movies, and the insecurities that came with it. 

He told Off Camera: “In my case, the quickest way to forget about the fact that you’re being watched is to get very drunk.

“And then as you get very drunk, you become aware that ‘Oh, people are watching more now because now I’m getting very drunk, so I should probably drink more to ignore that more.’”

Meanwhile, Daniel was also busy talking about his new role as parody icon Weird Al Yankovic in his upcoming biopic.

The movie, called WEIRD: The Al Yankovic Story - which is set to land in November - sees the Harry Potter star take on the titular character as the narrative explores every facet of his life, from his meteoric rise to fame with early hits like Eat It and Like a Surgeon to his “torrid celebrity love affairs and famously depraved lifestyle”.
