It's being written by the 'Bend It Like Beckham' director.

Because everyone should have a Disney princess of their own, news reaches us that Bend It Like Beckham director Gurinder Chadha is set to develop a musical for Disney.

Chadha is co-writing with her husband Paul Mayeda Berges, report Deadline, the pair having worked together on movies including Bend It Like Beckham (2002) and Blinded by the Light (2019).

Reportedly the new film will focus on a "dynamic princess from Indian history", though exactly who that is, and plot specifics, are being kept under wraps for the moment.

Bend It Like Beckham smashed box office records when it arrived in 2002. The film told the story of talented young footballer Jesminder Bhamra (Parminder Nagra) attempt to pursue a career in professional football despite her parents' wishes.

A musical take on the film, written again by Chadha and Mayeda Berges, made its West End and world premiere at the Phoenix Theatre, London, in May 2015.

Chadha has branched out into TV in recent years. Her recent projects include the historical drama Beecham House, which ran on ITV in the UK, and a contribution to the pandemic-era short film anthology series Homemade.
