This is almost like seeing a teacher out of school and in casual clothes. Art Attack star Neil Buchanan has stunned fans of the 1990's cult kids' show after they realised he was once in a heavy metal band.

The former CITV presenter, 66, fronted the popular children’s art series which ran for 19 series between 1990 and 2007 which then moved onto Disney Junior.

Buchanan played lead guitar and sang backing vocals for Marseille, a heavy metal group based in Liverpool, formed with Andy Charters and Keith Knowles in 1976.

Originally called AC/DC, the band had to change their name later that year after the success of the other Aussie rock band with the same name.

Marseilles won the first ever UK Battle of the Bands which was judged by Queen’s Brian May and Roger Taylor, and the band signed a five-year recording contract with Mountain Records.

According to insiders, they went on to release a debut album in 1978, Red, White and Slightly Blue and supported Judas Priest, Nazareth, Whitesnake and UFO on tour but Buchanan left the group in 1980 before they all parted ways in 1984.

The rockers reformed in 2008 and Buchanan left Marseilles again in 2014.

One amazed fan tweeted: “Had no idea Neil Buchanan had forged a second career in heavy metal.”

Another said: “I am today's year old when I found out that Neil Buchanan (the Art Attack guy) used to be in a heavy metal band, playing a guitar!”

Artist and musician Buchanan has previously had to deny the rumours that he is the artist behind Banksy.

In September 2020, he tweeted: “Hi folks. You won't be surprised when I tell you - contrary to the recent media frenzy - I am honestly, hand on heart, NOT Banksy!!

“Trust me, if I had created some of those amazing images he has made, I would be the first to stand up and take a bow.

"Sadly, I didn't create them - so I can't! But I did paint all the stuff here. Hope you like it! As ever, thanks for your support. Neil.”
