We’ve heard of football or boxing taking troubled kids off the street and inspiring them to do better and be better, Anthony Joshua would be a fantastic example. Now say hello to a bunch of kids from Nairobi, the sprawling capital of Kenya, who are being rescued from a life of violence, drugs and crime by the most unlikely of sports: fencing!
Say hakuna matata to the Tsavora Fencing Club whose members routinely hold bouts in the street, where their thrusts, parries and ripostes strike a dramatic scene in their snow-white uniforms throwing graceful shapes across the reddish ground.
They struggle to get the equipment they need and yet the passion and (they use the word) “obsession” of the members sees several making it to the national team.
There they face often better equipped teams but their enthusiasm always carries them through. They have a mentorship program and the 45 kid members are now beacons of their communities and inspiring kids all over the world.

Archaeology nuts will be delighted at the news of a beautifully preserved medieval castle just discovered in Brittany along with some wonderful artefacts.
Say bonjour to the French city of Vannes where a dig was undertaken in front of a hotel to check the ground was OK to lay foundations for a new museum. They knew there was the remains of something and it’s found to be a castle, spookily well preserved because of the nature of the wet soil that’s surrounded it and protected it all these centuries.
They found staircases, including a remarkably well-preserved ceremonial staircase with a decorated core, several intact steps, and a sitting window. Lots of it looked like it had been laid last week!
Loos, drainage, turrets, even a clever waterwheel! And in the remains of the moat they found a treasure trove of stuff.
Cooking utensils, pots, pans, and wooden crockery, jewellery, a selection of coins, padlocks, remains of furniture like cabinets and chairs, keys, pins, clothing fragments, remains of the watermill, shoe buckles, and graffiti-covered ceramic tiles were all found.
Francois woz ere!
