Redditors have struck up a very British debate over the appropriate refreshment etiquette when you have a tradesperson in your house.

The discussion was sparked by a post on the subreddit r/britishproblems titled “If you have someone come to your house to do some work and not offer them a tea or coffee then you’re an a***hole.”

Some commenters chimed in in agreement, with one saying “We have tea bags and coffee in our cupboards that literally only exist for when tradespeople or visitors come round”. Another redditor added “I’m physically incapable of having anyone in my home without offering them a drink. As soon as you’ve crossed through the door I’ll be asking if you want one”. Another commenter joked “If I have tradesmen working at my house I turn into Mrs Doyle.”

However, a surprising majority were unwilling to offer their electricians and plumbers a cuppa. One commenter said “If you want me to supply drinks then give me a discount. Otherwise bring a thermos with you.”. Another seconded this feeling, saying “I am an a***hole. I expect you to bring your own food and drinks/go get them.”

Another popular response seemed to be that people simply don’t drink hot drinks themselves, so have none to offer guests. One of the top upvoted comments read: “Being the weirdo I am, I don’t drink hot drinks at all and pretty much only drink water or alcohol in my house. I often offer them a glass of water but don’t think it’s really the same.”
