They’re known for serving up anthems rather than pints, but a trio of big-name Irish musicians have invested in the beer industry.
U2 frontman Bono and guitarist The Edge, and singer-songwriter Hozier, best known for his massive tune Take Me To Church, are investing in a craft brewery in County Wicklow, Ireland.
Wicklow Wolf Craft Brewing Company was founded in 2014 by Quincey Fennelly and Simon Lynch, and the duo have managed to secure an impressive €2.4 million in funding. This includes a decent chunk from half of U2.
As reported by The Currency, Bono (real name Paul Hewson) and The Edge (otherwise known as David Howell Evans) invested €327,000 between them.
Meanwhile, Hozier (Andrew Hozier-Byrne) has invested close to €110,000. The musician was born in Bray, County Wicklow, so is certainly familiar to the area.
Wicklow Wolf Craft Brewing has a range of craft beers, which are available all over Ireland, and the brewery was previously giving tours, although these have been paused during the pandemic.
Hopefully the move into the world of craft beer won’t affect U2’s plans to make a new album. The Edge stated in November that the band were working on new material. A new record would be their first LP since 2017's Songs of Experience.
Meanwhile, Hozier is definitely working on something new. At the start of the year, he posted a tweet showing that he was making music, along with a picture of himself playing a guitar accompanied by a pianist, and another picture of lyrics on a page.
Hozier’s latest studio album came out back in 2019, so fans were excited at the prospect of new material.
One Twitter user commented: “We can’t wait for it to be releaseeeeddd!!! Any clues on a release date? A first single?”
Another person added: “HOZIER, I HONESTLY CANNOT WAIT FOR YOUR NEXT MUSIC, IT'S JUST SO MESMERIZING.”
Someone else wrote: “Impatiently but with respect and joy - waiting for your new music.”
