Going on holiday can be a plant-lovers worst nightmare.

No matter how green-fingered and attentive you are on a day-to-day basis, what will happen to your beloved plants when you go away?

If you're home looks more like a garden centre, this hack will save your plant friends.

Some people get a friendly neighbour or loved one to pop by and water, but that isn't always the best move.

One plant-lover has shared a top tip to keep your green guys happy, so months or years of looking after them doesn't go to waste.

Posting as @selfcareplants , Justine Shannon shared her tip using a saucepan of water and some string.

It's as simple as that.

Justine fills a saucepan of water and adds a piece of cotton macrame cord for each plant.

Add one end of the cord into the water touching the bottom, and it must be higher than the plants.

Place the other end of the cord deep into the soil.

Justine arranged all of her plants so they are situated around the pan of water, with a cord each inside.

The cord allows the plants to suck up the water from the pan - working in a similar fashion to a straw.

She later filmed her return after a 12-day holiday to find the saucepan almost empty.

‘I’m happy to report the plants are happy and thriving,’ she says.

Commenters praised the trick: "A girl I know did this for 15 days vacation and all of her plants were thriving!"

"I've got 70+ plants, that won't work" panicked one.

"This actually works, I have tried it before" added another.

"We filled washing up bowls with water, they survived without me being home" praised one.

Have you ever tried this before?
