Step away from the dishwasher.

If you've been chucking wooden spoons and spatulas in there after cooking, you've been doing it wrong.

An Australian foodie and nutritionist has shared her top tip on TikTok for how to clean wooden utensils.

Fans were horrified after she showed how dirty wooden spoons are even after a rinse in the dishwasher.

Posting as Melanie Lionello, she challenged fans: ''I bet your wooden spoons are not nearly as clean as you think."

She then holds up a spoon which looks perfectly clean at first glance, but she says her hack is essential.

You need a glass jar, bicarbonate of soda and boiling water.

After fifteen minutes of soaking the wooden spoon in the hot bicarb water, she showed how dirty the water was.

''As you can see, it is absolutely disgusting," before leaving it for another 15 minutes saying the spoon ''had some more cleaning to do''.''I recommend doing this every couple of months with your wooden spoons, especially if you use them a lot like me.

''And that way you know that they're properly going to be clean.

''Super helpful if you use pigmented ingredients like turmeric, tomato, paprika, oil.''

One viewer disagreed: "'Don’t forget that wood is naturally antibacterial.''

Another argued they had "been using wooden spoons for years and just get washed in sink with other dishes'' and they hadn't ''died or had food poisoning''.

Will you give this a go?
