When was the last time you washed your pillows?

If the answer is never, this one is for you.

For many of us it's out of sight, out of mind, and because they're hidden behind a pillowcase you don't realise how the dirt is building up.

Unfortunately pillows can be packed full of bacteria from sweat, saliva and dust, but what do you if your washing machine is too small to fit pillows in?

Cleaning expert at My Job Quote, Sarah Dempsey, has the essential tips for you.

If your pillows aren't yellow or brown and you think they are salvageable, Sarah says: “If you need to clean a pillow, the best thing you can do is begin by shaking off all of the loose debris and dust."

You can also use a vacuum to go over them, or hang them outside until the dust falls out.

Next she recommends using a damp cloth with a small amount of mild detergent on it to kill any germs.

“If there are any stubborn stains present, you may have to resort to scrubbing,” Sarah said.

Next, lay it somewhere flat and airy to air dry.

Once clean and dry, Sarah recommends that you use a pillow protector as well as a pillowcase, or failing that, use two pillowcases instead of one.

The addition means there is two layers of fabric between your face and the actual pillow.

If a stain gets through the double layers and onto the pillow itself, it is important to treat the stain as soon as possible.

The key is to dab a small amount of washing powder or liquid detergent onto the area.

Next, wash as normal to prevent long-lasting stains.
