Who is in the running to be Christmas Number One in the music charts this year? Bookmakers have slashed the odds on one particular festive favourite and it looks like it could be weaving its way to the top spot ahead of Sam Ryder and Nala The Station Cat.

The Pogues' Fairytale Of New York could be heading for number one this Christmas 2023 following the sad death of music icon Shane MacGowan.

The band’s frontman passed away on 30th November, aged 65, at home with his wife and family by his side.

Bookmakers Coral said the song, which features singer Kirsty MacColl, has peaked since MacGowan’s death and the odds of it bagging number one have been cut to 1-4 from 5-4.

Coral’s John Hill said: "Punters think there is going to be a wave of support behind The Pogues landing the Christmas number one single this year following the sad passing of Shane MacGowan.

"We make Fairytale Of New York odds-on to top the official singles charts on Christmas Day, 36 years after it was released."

This year's Christmas Number One race was already been blown wide open recently, when LadBaby, made up of Roxanne and Mark Hoyle, announced they won’t be releasing a Christmas single for 2023, breaking their five-year run of festive number one tracks.

Although Fairytale Of New York is often a staple during the festive season in the UK singles charts, it missed out on the number one spot in 1987.

A statement posted on behalf of his Shane MacGown's wife, Victoria Mary Clarke, his sister, Siobhán, and father, Maurice, on The Pogues’ official Instagram account said: "It is with the deepest sorrow and heaviest of hearts that we announce the passing of Shane MacGowan.

"Shane died peacefully at 3am this morning (30 November, 2023) with his wife Victoria and family by his side.

"Prayers and the last rites were read which gave comfort to his family."

The prolific musician’s death was confirmed by his wife Victoria Mary Clarke and the music world is continuing to remember him.

The President of Ireland, Michael D. Higgins, called him 'one of music’s greatest lyricists'.

His wife Victoria shared a heartbreaking statement which read: "I don’t know how to say this so I am just going to say it.

"Shane who will always be the light that I hold before me and the measure of my dreams and the love of my life and the most beautiful soul and beautiful angel and the sun and the moon and the start and end of everything that I hold dear has gone to be with Jesus and Mary and his beautiful mother Therese.

"I am blessed beyond words to have met him and to have loved him and to have been so endlessly and unconditionally loved by him and to have had so many years of life and love and joy and fun and laughter and so many adventures."
