Travis frontman Fran Healy chatted to Virgin Radio’s Ricky Wilson, and explained how he secured his band the opportunity to support The Killers on their current UK tour.

As well as supporting the Las Vegas band, the Scottish legends are set to play live at Virgin Radio not once, but twice over the next few days (and you could be at one of them - read on to find out more) as they celebrate the release of their tenth studio album, L.A. Times, which comes out this Friday (12th July).

On the release day, they will be performing live on the Chris Evans Breakfast Show with webuyanycar, and then the following Friday 19th July, they’ll be playing an intimate Sunset Session gig from the top of the tower.

Ahead of those exciting appearances, vocalist Fran called in to the Virgin Radio UK Drivetime show to talk to Kaiser Chiefs’ singer Ricky, who told him: “I don't know if you know this about me, but I once reviewed Travis for Leeds student newspaper. I said you were ‘One to watch.’”

Speaking from backstage at The O2 in London, Fran replied: “Aww, thank you.”

Ricky continued: “It was just after your first album came out and I thought you were incredible. I love your stage presence and I think you're amazing. As did Brandon [Flowers] from The Killers. But he could show his appreciation by adding a bit more to that. Well I can just tell you I like you but he's taking you guys on tour, right?”

Saying, “Yeah, it's been so cool,” Fran explained how he got in contact with The Killers’ frontman directly to enquire. “I've known them for 20 years,” he said. “I texted him and I was like, ‘Hey man, I hear you're doing a tour of the UK, can we support you?’ And he's like, ‘What?’ He was like, ‘Sure!’”

Ricky interjected: “Hang on, hang on, hang on. You asked?”

When Fran confirmed this, Ricky joked: “That's not very cool, is it?”

Fran said: “Oh man, come on, it's the coolest thing ever!”

The Drivetime host admitted: “I asked as well and he said no to me! You gazumped me.”

The Travis vocalist said: “I've got the bat phone, the Brandon phone. It’s a direct line to the Brandon cave in Las Vegas.”

Ricky suggested: “Just play Mr Brightside anywhere and he'll come!”

Glasgow’s multiple BRIT and Ivor Novello-winning songwriting giants will play LIVE in the evening of Friday 19th July 2024 at the top of The News Building in London (next to The Shard). This very special gig will feature the stunning backdrop of the sun setting over Central London. If you want the chance to win a pair of tickets, then go here.
