Nirvana fans will be interested to learn that the band’s former bassist has said he is going to drop some new music.
While his former bandmate, Foo Fighters’ frontman Dave Grohl, has been busy making a horror film and collaborating with Fraggles, it seems that Nirvana’s bassist, Krist Novoselic, has been getting creative too.
Taking to his Twitter account, the musician alluded to the fact that he has been working on an album which he aims to release in the spring.
As reported by NME, when sharing an interview he did in 2011 with Bass Player magazine, Novoselic wrote: “I have not read this in years, but recall being happy with how it turned out.” He then added, in a now-deleted tweet: “I am really busy trying to finish a record. In the middle of some hangups – looking for a mid-March release. But it’s a secret, so don’t tell anybody!”
Not only was the tweet deleted, but as of today (February 23rd), the Twitter account from which the tweet was sent seems to have been suspended, so the mystery as to whether he is actually releasing a record or not deepens!
If Novoselic does drop some new material, it will be his first release since he formed Giants In The Trees, an environmentally-conscious band which released two albums, the first in 2017 and the second in 2019. Whether any potential new music would be solo work or a continuation of the Giants In The Trees project is also unclear.
Last year, the two surviving members of Nirvana celebrated the 30th anniversary of the band’s seminal second album, Nevermind. Speaking to Uncut, Novoselic said: “The anniversary is really for the fans and what the album means to them. If it helps people make some sense of the world, that’s great. You have to figure it out for yourself, though.”
Nirvana released three studio albums, all of which featured founder members Novoselic and iconic vocalist/guitarist Kurt Cobain. Dave Grohl joined the band as drummer after the first album, Bleach, which featured drummer Chad Channing.
Before Kurt Cobain’s death, the band also released a live acoustic album, MTV Unplugged in New York, and a B-sides compilation, Incesticide.
