Sir Rod Stewart has paid an emotional tribute to his late father as he is set to be honoured at the prestigious Scottish Music Awards this weekend.

The singer is one of many big names to be celebrate at the event in Glasgow’s iconic Barrowland Ballroom, and he admitted he wished his “dear old dad” were there to see it.

The awards celebrate some of the best home-grown Scottish talent and Sir Rod is up for the Specsavers Outstanding Achievement in Music Award.

While acknowledging the honour in a recent statement, the singer also noted how it would be an “emotional evening” for him without his dad there to see it.

He said: “In all my days I never ever dreamt I’d be receiving an award from the land of my Father. This will be undoubtedly an emotional evening for me, I just wish my dear old Dad (a Hibs supporter by the way) was here to enjoy it. Thank you so much everyone.”

Other stars up for an award this weekend are the likes of Wet Leg, Gerry Cinnamon and Craig Logan.

Paolo Nutini is also up for two awards, including Best Album Award and Best Live Act Award. The singer is set to play five homecoming shows in Glasgow later this year

He joined The Chris Evans Breakfast Show with Sky earlier this year to talk about his latest album, Last Night in the Bittersweet.

This comes as Sir Rod revealed he is renting one of his homes to a family of seven Ukrainian refugees.

The singer said he usually kept “all my charitable efforts nice and quiet” but hopes by sharing this decision, it might inspire others to do the same.

He explained: "It just makes me want to do more. I am thinking of getting another house now and getting a lot more people over.

"I usually keep all my charitable efforts nice and quiet and just do it. But I thought, 'I am a knight, I have been given this knighthood because of the things I've achieved in my life and the charity work I've done over the years.’

"But that was the past; I want to be seen to be doing something now. I am a knight, I should be using my power to do something for people.

"I am sure that if there are people out there who see what I am doing, they will pick up some slack too."
