Cillian Murphy receives first BAFTA nomination for Peaky Blinders

Cillian Murphy has received his first BAFTA nomination for Peaky Blinders.

The actor played head gangster Tommy Shelby in the hit BBC series and his appearance in the sixth and final season of the show has now landed him a nomination for Leading Actor.

It’s hard to believe it has taken this long for Murphy to receive praise for Peaky Blinders and his only previous BAFTA nod came in 2006 when he was nominated for Rising Star with Emily Blunt, Naomie Harris, Ben Whishaw and Eva Green (who ended up winning).

Peaky Blinders came to an end in April last year after six intense and gritty seasons and saw Tommy riding off into the distance after finding out he wasn’t dying of tuberculoma at all.

It’s not completely the end of the road for the Shelby family however, as a Peaky Blinders film is currently in the works with creator Steven Knight back in the writer’s chair and Cillian returning as Tommy.

Knight previously revealed the film would be a “very specific” and “true” story revolving around World War Two but details about the movie have been kept very quiet.

Cillian spoke about the project in June 2022 but was equally as elusive about what to expect.

When asked what more he knew, Murphy said: “Genuinely nothing and I’d be as excited as anybody to read a script.

“But I think it’s good for everyone to have a little break. That’s always a healthy thing and then we can regroup.”

He added: “Steven is an insanely busy and in-demand writer, but I know that he loves writing Peaky above all, I’m sure he’s told you the same. He adores it. So I think when the time comes, if there’s more story to be told, I’ll be there.”
