With Kim Cattrall’s Samantha not appearing in the Sex and the City spin-off so far, speculation has been rife as to whether she will turn up in future episodes.

Following a rift between Cattrall and Sarah Jessica Parker, the former did not return with the rest of the SATC gang for And Just Like That. But it did seem as though the show was possibly setting up the return of Samantha Jones to the fold, as, while not physically appearing in the first season, (and this is a very minor spoiler if you’re not up to date), she did share a number of text messages with Sarah Jessica Parker’s Carrie Bradshaw.

Samantha’s absence was explained by a falling out between herself and Carrie, whereby the former upped sticks and moved to London. Whilst, at first, Samantha ignores the texts that Carrie sends her, she eventually engages in text exchanges and (another season one spoiler coming up), when Carrie asks, “Want to talk?” Samantha replies, “Soon”. Later, when Carrie is in Paris, she texts to say, “Want to meet for a cocktail?” to which her former friend says, “How’s tomorrow night?”.

However, if you are hoping that all this is leading to Kim Cattrall being back in season two with a bang, then prepare to be disappointed.

Showrunner Michael Patrick King told Variety: “I have no realistic expectation of Kim Cattrall ever appearing again.”

Meanwhile, when asked whether she would be okay with Cattrall coming back, if it ever became a possibility, Sarah Jessica Parker told Variety: “I don’t think I would, because I think there’s just too much public history of feelings on her part that she’s shared.

“I haven’t participated in or read articles, although people are inclined to let me know.”

She continued: “We didn’t go to Kim for this, you know. After we didn’t do the movie and the studio couldn’t meet what she wanted to do, we have to hear her and listen to her and what was important to her. It didn’t fit into what was important or needed for us.”

Speaking about Cattrall’s character, SJP added: “Samantha’s not gone. Samantha’s present, and I think was handled with such respect and elegance. She wasn’t villainised.”

So, there you have it, our hopes of actually seeing Samantha in future episodes have been dashed… just like that!
