She's known for her sketch show characters such as Nan and Lauren ‘am I bovvered’ Cooper, and now Catherine Tate is set to unleash a whole new set of characters in an upcoming sitcom.
New Netflix comedy Hard Cell will see the comedian portraying all manner of people in the fictional women's prison HMP Woldsley. Among the characters she will play are the jailhouse’s governor, a first-time con, two other inmates called Ros and Big Viv - the latter of which is a violent, devoted Kardashian fan - and an ex-prisoner named Anne-Marie.
Tate will also play a male prison guard called Marco who has dreams of appearing on Love Island.
Set over six episodes, Hard Cell follows the inmates as they rehearse a musical directed by ex-EastEnders star Cheryl Fergison.
The show’s synopsis says: “Rehearsals draw together an oddball collection of women as they find their voices, grow in confidence, and strengthen their friendships.”
It adds: “Funny yet surprisingly moving, Hard Cell leans into the comical truth of prison life.”
The other cast members include Niky Wardley, who played one of Lauren’s BFF’s in The Catherine Tate Show, and will be a prison officer in the new show.
And Fans of Catherine Tate are in for a double treat over the next few weeks. Not only is Hard Cell hitting Netflix in April, one of her most-loved characters is set to light up the big screen later this week.
The Nan Movie will see her foul-mouthed grandmother character embark on a wild road trip from London to Ireland with her grandson Jamie (in a role reprised by Mathew Horne of Gavin and Stacey fame).
Katherine Parkinson from The IT Crowd and Taskmaster will also feature in the movie.
Hard Cell will stream on Netflix from April 12th.
