Marvel star Tom Hiddleston is swapping comic book fantasy for some real-life drama.

The actor is set to star in The White Darkness for Apple TV+, which is based on the 2018 book of the same name by David Grann.

It’s inspired by the true story of Henry Worsley, a former soldier who was obsessed with adventure and attempted to cross Antarctica on foot and without any assistance. After crossing 900 miles, Henry was forced to call for help due to ill health, and died aged 55.

The White Darkness is not the only Apple TV+ title on the Loki star's docket, with The Essex Serpent, also based on a novel, due out next month.

Set in the Victorian era in 1893, The Essex Serpent, written by Sarah Perry, tells the tale of Cora Seaborne (Clare Danes) a woman who moves from London to a small village in Essex after her abusive husband dies, and becomes intrigued by the idea that it might be haunted by a mythological sea serpent.

Apple TV+ is quickly becoming the place to be for the big names in Hollywood.

They just signed Harrison Ford for their move into comedy with Shrinking, starring Jason Segel.

The move marks Harrison’s first role in a major TV series, and will feature in ten episodes alongside Jason, who also wrote the show.

Produced by Warner Bros. Television, Shrinking follows the story of Jimmy (Segel), a grieving therapist who decides he’s going to break the rules with his clients and tell them exactly what he thinks.

Disregarding his training and the ethics of therapy, Jimmy soon finds out this approach will make huge (and chaotic) changes to people’s lives, as well as his own.

Ford will be appearing as Dr Phil Rhodes, a down-to-earth “blue collar shrink, blunt but with an ever present twinkle.”

Phil is a pioneer in Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) with a successful practice but has recently been diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease which forces him to assess his life and move out of his comfort zone.
